Sankofa Farms is a 12-acre farm in Cedar Grove, NC that Kamal launched through a USDA direct farm ownership loan. The farm aims to improve the perception of agriculture as a profession through it's Sankofa Farm Academy that exposes African-American youth to high-level farming techniques including bee-keeping and year-round caterpillar tunnel production. With 5 acres under cultivation, he is beginning a CSA and sells through a cooperative that addresses food aparthied. He is also a Real Farmer Care recipient and we discuss his perspective on the human element of sustainability. As a farmer, educator, bee-keeper, husband, father, and doctoral student at NC State Ag, Kalam is doing incredible work on Sankofa Farm.
