A NOFA Talk with Liz Josep of Heifer International

Reducing tillage on your farm can preserve and enhance the microbial ecosystem, improving soil tilth, moisture retention and nutrient availability for your crops. Liz Joseph of Heifer International in Rutland, MA shares tips for managing a no-till, one acre garden from Liz, who has been managing her market garden with no-till and hand-tillage systems for five years.

We have no idea where Liz is these days, but this talk she gave at NOFA Mass inspired me over a year ago to really start digging into no-till. This quote in particular piqued my interest:

"We used to grow about 210 tomato plants and now we grow 50 to 70 but those 50 to 70 yield the sane amount as the 210. If not more.”

Yeah…

Interesting stuff, great detail on garden setup/maintenance, and a ton of in-field photographs. Check it out. If you know Liz, tell her we said “hi” and to please send us a message. We’d love to talk to her ourselves.
